Welcome to Prudhoe Parish Church

Worship and growth

We are ever growing and learning. Whether with family, friends or on your own – and wherever you are on your journey of faith – there is a welcome for you here. Join us for an informal style of 10.00am Sunday morning worship in the Church of England tradition: for songs, prayers and bible teaching. Maybe join a midweek fellowship or prayer group to explore your faith further!

Families and young people

Our welcome is for all ages. There are plenty of toys, games and people to help out in dedicated areas of church during services for those who need them, and our Young Church invites those aged 3-11 for fun activities alongside our 10.00am service during term-time: why not give it a try! We also love to offer relaxed opportunities for older children to meet, ask questions and have fun.

Community and service

We care for one another and for our community in Prudhoe and beyond, working with other church groups where we can to serve and share the Gospel. We seek to offer support through prayer, pastoral care and practical help, including partnership with local and overseas mission. We open our Parish Hall regularly to welcome anyone for tea/coffee, and a chat. Many other events happen there: for more information, visit our Parish Hall website!

Phil - Our Curate

Phil is starting out his journey in ministry with us and already been a great blessing. His passion to reach out with the good news of Jesus means that we expect he'll be a blessing to the town as well as the church! Phil is with us to learn as much as he is to minister and he needs our encouragement as much as we need his.

Our Values

At St Mary Magdalene, we are guided by a commitment to love, community, and faith. We believe in welcoming everyone, regardless of their background, into a nurturing environment where they can explore their relationship with God. Our core values include:

Faith: We prioritize a deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, fostering spiritual growth through worship, prayer, and study of the Scriptures.
Community: We strive to build meaningful connections, supporting one another in our journeys of faith and extending warmth and hospitality to all.
Service: Living out our faith, we engage in acts of kindness and service, both within our church and beyond, serving our local and global communities.

Integrity: We uphold honesty and transparency in all our operations, encouraging a culture of trust and accountability among our members.
Diversity: We celebrate the tapestry of God’s creation, embracing all individuals and recognizing the unique contributions they bring to our church family.
Together, we seek to embody these values, making St Mary Magdalene a place where everyone can grow in their faith and find their purpose.

Worship and Growth

Church is a community of people from different backgrounds and different places travelling different paths, who find themselves united in a common journey of faith in Jesus Christ as saviour of the world. Some of us have been Christians for many years; we may feel secure in our faith and love to share it, but we know we are “not finished yet” and sometimes get things wrong: we need to keep coming back to church. Others of us aren’t sure about it all at all: we may be searching, wrestling, trying to understand what Christianity is all about and what it means for us – or experiencing doubt: Church is where we look for answers. Sometimes we might be encouraged and full of energy, but at other times burdened and weary: whoever you are, wherever you come from and whatever you’re going through, you are welcome to sit with us, as part of our church family!

Sunday worship 10am
We pray together, sing together, seek guidance through bible teaching and (on alternate weeks) share bread and wine together. Services have an informal style adhering to Church of England tradition and benefit from accompaniment by a gifted music group most weeks or, occasionally, organ music. They last for between an hour and an hour-and-a-quarter (depending on whether there is communion), and are followed by an opportunity to gather as a church family in our Parish Hall, chatting and sharing fellowship over tea, coffee and cake! Families are really welcome to all our services, and we have a Young Church that runs alongside them during term time: more details about our ministry to young people can be found here.
Thursday Holy Communion 10am, and other services
A shorter, quieter Holy Communion service is held during the week, and is another time to break bread together. We use a more “formal” style here, but your welcome will be just as warm: why not try it out! If you enjoy a less formal or structured approach, our worship also takes the form of occasional outdoor Sunday afternoon services at Eastwood Park or “Praise and Prayer” events in the main church building. Details may be found in our weekly pew sheet.
Prayer Meetings
Christians are called to "pray continually - but, in our busy lives, this doesn’t always seem easy! To help us, a weekly prayer meeting takes place on Tuesdays at 9am, recognising the importance of honouring God in this way as we grow in faith and discover his will for us individually and as a church family. Join us if you can, and be encouraged week by week as you see God’s answers to prayer! We also meet regularly for separate prayer meetings with Christians of other denominations in our area – including friends from the Gate Church, Prudhoe Methodist church, Our Lady and St Cuthbert’s Catholic Church and Stocksfield Baptist Church; this is usually at 8.30am on Wednesdays; check our weekly pew sheet for details.
Fellowship Groups
Friendships between Christians help strengthen our understanding of God through bible study and prayer as we get to know one another better and share the ups and downs of Christian living in a complicated world. Fellowship groups are safe spaces where small groups of Christians of different ages and experience meet regularly to study scripture and learn from each other in an informally structured way. If you are not part of a group already and would like to try one out, do speak to Dan: joining one can be a great help along your faith journey.
New to Christianity?
The leadership team love to run short courses like Identity and 3-2-1 that introduce people to the Christian faith. If you are interested in joining one of these, please contact us for details about an upcoming course.

Families and Young People

Are you looking for a vibrant, fun, and safe environment where young people can learn about God and Jesus? Children and teenagers are really important members of our church family; we love to welcome them, and are committed to offering a great experience to all age groups. A devoted team of safely-recruited volunteers brings enthusiasm, a range of professional skills, and knowledge of the bible to our youth work. As we grow in faith alongside our young people, we love being challenged by their questions! Our youth ministry is a priority for us: to help develop it more in the months and years ahead, we are actively seeking to employ a Children and Families Worker for the benefit of the church and community.

Under 3s
During services there is a special area of church where toddlers are catered for, with a dedicated volunteer assisting with toys and activities. Optionally, where parents/carers value “time-out” space with their little ones away from the main service area, they may continue to listen to sermons and prayers via a sound relay system in our adjoining vestry. Away from services, volunteers from the church family also help at the popular Little Treasures toddler group on a weekly basis at our Parish Hall
3-11-year-olds
Young Church. After starting Sunday worship together with their families in the congregation (perhaps joining in with musical instruments during the first song), children in this age group are accompanied to our Parish Hall for a time of carefully prepared activities designed to bring bible stories to life – while having lots of fun! Parents are welcome to accompany their children or remain in the main service as they feel most comfortable. We may run Young Church as two parallel sessions for older/younger groups depending on the ages of the children on the day. At the end of the service, parents join their children again for drinks and biscuits with the rest of the church family in the Church Hall. Outside of church, we sometimes hold social activities for children and their families, like swimming or bowling trips!
Teens
Young people who are interested in spending time with others exploring their faith are encouraged and welcome: the leadership team will work with you to offer safe spaces for friendship and discussions about living out the Christian faith. This might be through a Youth Fellowship, led by vicar Dan with other members of the church family according to demand: also a chance to play games and eat food!

Hear From Our Families

Here's what one parent had to say about our Young Church:"I have 2 young lads who attend Young Church at St Mary Magdalene in Prudhoe, aged 6 and 7, and they love it. It is amazing how much they are learning and enjoying talking about Jesus and God. In fact, I think sometimes they know more than I do, which motivates me even more to become a better Christian. They love their leaders who run the sessions and have made true connections with them and the other children in the group."

The best way to experience our Young Church is to come along to a Sunday service during term time and see firsthand how much your children will benefit from our program. Feel free to email us or give us a call for more information. We can't wait to welcome you and your family!

Community and Service

Christians are called to respond to the Gospel by serving others as Jesus did, saying, “..whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”. We try to follow his example by sharing our gifts and resources with the wider community of Prudhoe and beyond. We might do this through simple acts of kindness toward family and friends, sharing the Gospel message at our workplaces or giving up time to help out with some of our activities. Some practical things that happen in our Church community are listed below (do check our weekly pew sheet for any variations in timing week by week).

Coffee Mornings
We welcome anyone to these “open door” events in our warm Parish Hall. Homemade cakes and a hot drink are on offer on Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10am – served with a friendly smile and a chat – and prayer is available for any who want it.
Lunch Club
On Wednesdays at 1pm our volunteers cook and serve a hot lunch for those in our community who value this in the company of others, at a discounted price – also in our Parish Hall. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated.
Pastoral care and home visiting
Sometimes people in our community are unable to come to church, or are otherwise struggling with grief or illness. We work hard to stay connected with all of the church family and support in any way we can: this might be with a visit and a chat or by bringing home communion – in addition to our regular visits to care homes to share Holy Communion or run bible study. Please tell us if you know someone who might appreciate this kind of visit.
Christian mission
With prayer and regular financial contributions, our church family has chosen to support the work of 4 organisations that have specialist skills to provide practical support to those in need at home and abroad, including:
Betel House, Hexham. Betel UK is a Christian charity dedicated to helping men, women and families facing social exclusion, including homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, and long-term unemployment.
Walking With Newcastle. This organisation is based in Wallsend and is the first port of call for refugees and asylum seekers dispersed to our area, providing a safe environment that aims to help clients feel less isolated, more confident, more able to adjust to a new life in the UK.
Practical Compassion for Destitute Children PCDC is a small, Christian charity focussed on providing relief for children living in poverty in the Holy Land and Israel. Contributions to school fees and (exceptionally) medical support are targeted at children in destitute need (irrespective of cultural or religious heritage) – typically following the death of one or both parents, abandonment by relatives, family break-down, illness, or mental/physical handicap.
Spirit of Africa The aim of Spirit of Africa Charity is to raise money to create foster care homes for orphans, or children in South Africa who have no-one to care for them and nowhere to call home.
Our Parish Hall
Mary Magdalene’s Parish Hall is made available to many community organisations, hosting over 20 community groups weekly from baby groups and youth support to AA meetings, senior socials and cultural classes. It is a designated Warm Hub and we hope to soon confirm our status as an Energy Resiliance Hub. It’s also a venue for private celebrations, memorials, and town-wide events. Check out our Parish Hall website to find out more or make a booking.
Located in the centre of Prudhoe and inspired by the Gospel, the Parish Hall is in a privileged location for serving our community, but we would love to do more: we sadly have to turn people away due to limited capacity. We are therefore engaged in an exciting Hall Development Project that will see more accessible access to the building, a newly-built annex that will increase capacity and support users with special needs, and improvements including solar panels that will make us much more environmentally friendly – something we are passionate about. See our dedicated web page for more information. Our vision is that these developments (scheduled during 2026) will be a blessing to the church and the town long into the 21st Century!

Baptisms at St Mary Magdalene

We’re so glad you’re considering a special service to celebrate the gift of your child. At St Mary Magdalene Church, we believe every child is a blessing, and it’s a joy to give thanks together in God’s presence.“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.”
— Psalm 127:3
Whether you're exploring baptism or a naming and blessing ceremony, we’re here to welcome, support, and walk with you through this meaningful moment.

Two Beautiful Ways to Celebrate

We offer two types of services—both rooted in love, thankfulness, and community.Blessing & Naming Ceremony
This is a joyful way to thank God for your child and ask for His blessing, without making the promises that come with baptism.
The Blessing – Following Jesus’ example, the minister prays for your child and family. The Naming – You share your child’s name, which is celebrated before the church.Supporters’ Promises – Close friends or family promise to support both you and your child as they grow. This ceremony is flexible and can take place at a time that works for you and the church.

Baptism includes all the elements above, plus an expression of your commitment to raising your child in the Christian faith. You, the godparents, and the church family all make promises to help guide your child as they grow in faith. That’s why we usually celebrate baptisms during our main Sunday morning service—so the whole church can be part of the welcome and celebration. We’ll also arrange a relaxed meeting with you (and the godparents, if possible) to walk through the service and answer any questions.
